Celebrating the Journey
In 2009 the idea of establishing a 501(c)(3) Foundation for DKG in NC was incubating in an ad hoc committee appointed to explore ways long-term funding for DKG initiatives might be expanded.
In 2011 the 501(c)(3) ad hoc Committee was doing meticulous research, reviewing the work of DKG foundations in other states, seeking legal advice, and drafting documents to show what a 501(c)(3) foundation might look like. Simultaneously, the ad hoc Committee for Leaving a Legacy, also doing intensive research, affirmed that establishing a 501(c)(3) Foundation was, indeed, the best way to go.
Merger of those two committees in 2012 produced the ad hoc Educational Foundation Committee, charged with disseminating information and receiving feedback from the membership of Eta State through publications, website postings, chapter visits, a convention workshop and Foundation exhibit.
Approval from Eta State to continue the establishment process came in April of 2013, followed by the appointment of an initial Board of Directors to oversee completion of the establishment process.
State approval of the Articles of Incorporation came on March 27, 2014. After months of working both individually and in rigorous small-group sessions to complete the two-inch-thick packet of forms and attachments called for on the infamous “Form 1023,” an elated Board finally received word that the Foundation was awarded 501(c)(3) status by the IRS on January 28, 2015!
Currently the appointed Board is completing the establishment process by forming committees to assist in developing policies and procedures that will govern all facets of the Foundation’s work and planning strategies for development of the Foundation’s financial base. Today the Foundation is open for business and ready to receive donations and applications for grants.
The “acorn” of an idea has taken root – ready, with nurture, to grow into a might “oak”!
